Tulsa Area Information

Tulsa Area Info

Tulsa in northeast Oklahoma happens to be the second-largest city in the state after Oklahoma City. Tulsa has a population of nearly 400,000 as of 2006.

Tulsa County is the most populated county density wise in the state.

Creek Native American tribe was first tribe to settle in the area in and around the 1830s. An infamous part of its history came in 1921, when it was the site of the notorious Race Riot. This was one of the worst racial violence escapes in the US history.

Tulsa in the past used to be dependant on the oil business. However the general downswing of this industry meant Tulsa had to change. Therefore, such industries as planes/aviation, other energy choices, the telecom field, techno centers and financial trades had to blossom here

For a majority of the century, Tulsa was know as the World´s Oil Capital. This ensured that Tulsa was the main player in the US oil industry at this time. Route 66 passes through the city and it has been heralded as the birthplace of the 66. It should also be noted that Western Swing emanated from here. This is a form of country music and various styles pop, blues and jazz, played for the benefit of dancing.

Tulsa is near to Tornado Alley,  a mid-America area between the Apalachian and Rocky mountains. Consequently the city occasionally experiences some severe storms. Tulsa is located in the foothills of the Ozark Mountains and on the banks of the Arkansas River which is in northeast Oklahoma. This area of Oklahoma is known locally as "Green Country" due to the many manmade lakes that have been created over many years. Some say it has changed the local climate considerably, since these were made. Some also are off the opinion that Tulsa is the cultural and arts center of Oklahoma, due to the Tulsa two world-renowned art museums The Philbrook and the Gilcrease are based here, plus a full-time professional opera and ballet companies. Tulsa also possesses one of the largest concentrations of art deco architecture, in the US. In 2005, the Tulsa was selected as one of "America's Most Livable Large Cities.

The University of Tulsa and Oral Roberts University, draw a huge crowd to Tulsa in search of higher education. Rhema Bible Church has a massive following

The McClellan-Kerr Arkansas River Navigation System is situated to the east of Tulsa. The main area here being the Tulsa Port of Catoosa. This is considered the most inland river port in the States that has access to international waterways.

Tulsa River Parks

Spread along miles of the Arkansas River, as it flows through Tulsa, River Parks provides some of the metropolitan area's finest outdoor recreation. More than 20 miles of asphalt-surfaced recreation trails weave past picnic areas, playgrounds, fountains and sculptures. The park's landscape ranges from manicured lawns to the rugged terrain of the Turkey Mountain Urban Wilderness Area.

Recreation in Tulsa River Parks includes fishing, rowing, kayaking, frisbee golf, hiking, biking and horseback riding.

During warm weather months, a variety of outdoor events are offered for Tulsa´s public enjoyment. Entertainment opportunities include concerts, festivals and the state's largest free fireworks display on the Fourth of July. Park facilities are also available for rental for activities such as runs, company parties, weddings and convention entertainment.

Tulsa Community Events/Attractions

As Tulsa River Parks began to take shape, public events became an integral part of the park, giving Oklahomans and visitors a great venue for family fun and entertainment. Located on the west bank of the river, the River West Festival Park, 2100 S. Jackson, is the site for most major events, but runs and various smaller activities are held throughout the park. Spring, summer and fall, Tulsans can enjoy free and paid-admission events such as the Great Tulsa Bike Ride, the Starlight Concert series and one of the nation's outstanding festivals, Oktoberfest. The park's annual holiday light display, "Christmas Lights the Park," illuminates the Zink Dam area each December. Events are made possible through the generosity of many Tulsa businesses and organizations, aided by hundreds of dedicated volunteers.

Tulsa Performing Arts Center

Occupying a half city block in Tulsa's historical downtown, the Performing Arts Center is the design of Minoru Yamasaki, architect of the World Trade Center. Constructed in 1977 with a combination of public and private funds, the facility is operated by The City of Tulsa and supported by the Tulsa Performing Arts Center Trust. Local arts organizations, entertainment promoters, performers and the citizens of Tulsa are the PAC' s customers.

The Tulsa Performing Arts Center houses five theatres and a large reception hall. More than a quarter of a million people visit the Center each year to attend a performance from one of Tulsa's acclaimed arts groups, to sample national and international talent, and to view the PAC's extensive art collection.

An attractive, comfortable setting, a knowledgeable staff and superb entertainment create the gratifying experience that audiences and performers enjoy when they come home to the arts in Tulsa.
